In April, the thoughts of UWRA members turn to pensions because that is when we hear an annual report on last year’s performance and the future prospects of the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).

Our speakers are the leaders of the State of Wisconsin Investment Board (SWIB), which manages the investment portfolio of the WRS, and the Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF), which administers retirement, insurance, and other benefit programs for around 650,000 active and retired state employees. This detailed annual report gives us insight into the policies and practices that govern the management of WRS and, importantly, income projections that are helpful in planning our personal finances.

Edwin Denson joined SWIB in 2018 as managing director, asset and risk allocation. He was appointed executive director/chief investment officer in April 2021. Before joining SWIB, Edwin was managing director, strategic tilting, at Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). Prior to joining CPPIB in 2013, Edwin spent 13 years in asset allocation, currency, and risk management as a portfolio manager at William Blair & Co., managing member at Singer Partners LLC, and managing director and head of asset allocation at UBS Global Asset Management. Earlier in his career, he was an economist at Lehman Brothers, Primark Decision Economics, and Putnam Investments, and he also briefly managed a commodity trading adviser and a quantitative equity strategy. Edwin holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Cornell University and a PhD in economics from Northwestern University.

Rochelle Klaskin, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Administrative Officer, joined SWIB in 2015 as its chief legal counsel before becoming deputy executive director/chief administrative officer. Throughout her more than 20-year career, she has led and advised organizations on board governance and legal matters, daily operations, and strategic transitions and planning. Prior to joining SWIB, she was a shareholder in the corporate practice group at the law firm Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., and she served as the managing partner of the firm’s Madison office. She earned her law degree from Chicago-Kent College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Todd Mattina, Head Economist, Asset & Risk Allocation CIO, joined SWIB in early 2023 and is responsible for taking a broad view of economic conditions in developing, recommending and implementing SWIB’s asset allocation and other policies for allocating the investments of the fully funded Wisconsin Retirement System. Monitoring capital market conditions and maintaining valuation models, he will support the agency’s investment divisions and determine how best to leverage economic policy to address opportunities, risks and challenges.

The Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) is the state agency administering retirement, insurance, and other benefit programs for active state and local employees and for retirees participating in the WRS.

John Voelker, ETF Secretary, will provide projections for future Core and Variable fund annuity adjustments, and highlights of the design elements that keep the WRS strong and fully funded. He was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Dept. of Employee Trust Funds in July 2014. Immediately prior to his appointment the served 11 years as the Wisconsin Director of State Courts. During his 22 years with the court system, he also served as the Assistant to the Chief Justice and as a Senior Policy Analyst. A native of Menasha, Wisconsin, he holds a Bachelor’s degree from UW-Oshkosh.

    This presentation will be recorded.

If you have preliminary questions for the speakers, please send to Program Coordinators Tom Eggert at tleggert@wisc.edu and Sandi Haase at sandi.haase@wisc.edu by Thursday, April 10.

Among the worries that haunt retirees is possibility that retirement might be ruined by the effects of aging — softening bones, wasting muscles, creaking joints, misfiring neurons. Is there any hope that medical science might find an elixir that eliminates, or at least postpones, the onset of these curses of the elderly? Sign in to a webinar on this subject by Adam Konopka, whose research is on the biological mechanisms causing the afflictions of old age and seeks to find medications that might beneficially modify those mechanisms. Dr. Konopka is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the UW-Madison Department of Medicine. He is conducting clinical trials on the effects of exercise and a medication, rapamycin, on musculoskeletal aging. Rapamycin has been shown to prolong life in mice and other experimental critters, and there are studies showing beneficial effects on humans. We hope you will join us to hear about the work that is being done on this complex problem that plays such an important role on our lives in retirement.

You are invited to join your fellow UWRA members and the Verona Senior Center members on another partnered day excursion to southeastern Wisconsin.

We’ll begin the day with a private, one-hour tour of renovated Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay. Their expert, engaging, and entertaining guides will provide a fascinating program covering the Observatory’s history, architectural detail, astronomical research, and a look inside the 90-foot dome of the 40-inch refractor, still the largest lens-type telescope in the world! You will have the opportunity to visit the gift shop for some unique items found only at Yerkes.

On our way to Yerkes Observatory, we will hear from Jim Lattis, author of Chasing the Stars: How the Astronomers of Observatory Hill Transformed Our Understanding of the Universe. Jim holds a Ph.D. in History of Science from UW–Madison and helped create UW Space Place, the outreach and public education center of the UW–Madison Astronomy Department and has directed it since its founding. He manages the historic Washburn Observatory; and teaches courses in introductory astronomy and its history.

Then we’ll board the bus for a short ride to the East Troy Depot for our private chartered, two-hour ride and lunch on the East Troy Electric Railroad. UWRA member Evan Richards will be our guide and conductor.

Just imagine yourself dining in the luxury of a dinner car with white linen tablecloths, china, silverware, and glassware reminiscent of the elegance of yesteryear. We will enjoy a leisurely ride down to Lower Phantom Lake while enjoying lunch and conversations with our table mates.

We'll start with a House Salad & Italian dressing, followed by Chicken with Roasted Garlic Parmesan Cream accompanied by Herb Smashed Red Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetable, Dinner Rolls & Butter. Beer, wine, and soft drinks are available for purchase. We’ll make a brief stop to stretch our legs and get some pictures at Indianhead Park in Mukwonago. A delicious slice of Spice Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and dark roast regular coffee, decaf coffee, and hot tea awaits us on the return trip to East Troy.

*Individual dietary needs can generally be accommodated.  Vegan and Vegetarian options available.

As always, the trip will include a surprise stop during the day! After completing our visits, we head home.

Seating is limited, so register soon as the capacity of the dinner car is 50 people!

    Of special note:

The railroad cars were designed and built long before the ADA, therefore they do not meet current standards for accessibility. Passengers must be able to walk up and down steps to get on and off cars. The car is heated and air conditioned and has a restroom.

It is 1979, the day of the church’s Centennial Celebration, and past parishioners have gathered to share hotdishes, bars, and stories from the last 100 years. As the women work in the kitchen, shared memories burst into life through a series of flashbacks. Travel back to 1897 and meet Vivian’s grandmother; see Karin as a newlywed cautiously navigating the politics of the kitchen; and be there in 1944 when Mavis first barreled her way through the door. The Centennial Celebration is bittersweet. Times are tough in this small farm community, and hard decisions will have to be made.

The UWRA and the Verona Senior Center are partnering on this travel opportunity. Seating is limited, so register today!

St. Josaphat Basilica epitomizes the striving of early Polish immigrants to express their ethnic heritage, spiritual devotion, and patriotic pride by building impressive houses of worship. The Parish was formed in 1888 as an offshoot of Saint Stanislaus Parish and subsequently became the largest Polish parish in Wisconsin. Its first home was a modest building that burned to the ground in 1889. The parish built a second church, but it was too small for its needs. This burgeoning immigrant community desired to construct a church to meet the needs of its more than 12,000 parishioners in the late 19th century. Ground was broken in 1896, and the new building would be finished in 1901. When the plans were nearly complete, Fr. Grutza learned that the Chicago Post Office and Custom House needed to be razed, and he was able to purchase it for $20,000.

The present church is not what the Chicago Post Office looked like. Architect Brielmaier changed his plans to include the salvaged materials, but his design remained faithful to the original model—St. Peter’s.  At the time of completion, the only building in the country with a larger dome was the United States Capitol. In the Catholic Church, basilica status is reserved for the largest, most beautiful, and most historically important churches.

In 1929, St. Josaphat Church was named the third basilica in the United States. Today there are over sixty. It is as close as we get to a European Cathedral. It is the largest church in Milwaukee, with a seating capacity of over 1,000 on the main floor, hundreds more can be accommodated in the galleries.

Following lunch, we are off to explore Milwaukee's past and present from our rivers, harbors & Lake Michigan during a 90-minute tour. Unforgettable views and a unique perspective of Milwaukee's history & architecture. Live narration is provided by experienced and entertaining tour guides & the captain.

Please note that temperatures can drastically vary on the lakefront, rivers, and mainland- please help make sure you stay comfortable by dressing in layers (year-round).

As always there will be a ‘surprise stop’ along the way!
