In 1998 the City of Madison established a Sister City Program that supports Sister City relationships in the belief that person-to-person ties are the strongest and to work for peace and better understanding of all cultures. Sister City relationships are created to develop lasting friendships on the human level and to provide a forum for the exchange or ideas and views.
Current Sister City Programs are Arcatao, El Salvador (1986), Bahir Dar, Ethiopia (2018), Camaguey, Cuba (1994), Freiburg, Germany (1988), Kanifing, The Gambia (2016), Mantova, Italy (2001), Obihiro, Japan (2003), Tepatitlan, Mexico (2012) and Vilnius, Lithuania (1988).
Join us to learn more about the Sister City Program and how the program works in three of our Sister Cities. The program will begin with Laila D’Costa, Sister City Program Coordinator and chair of the Sister City Collaboration Committee. Laila will discuss the history, breadth and importance of the sister cities program to Madison. Then we will dig more deeply into three sister cities. The panel will include Charles James (Madison-Freiburg, Germany); Jo Oyama Miller (Madison-Obihiro, Japan); and Frank Alfano (Madison-Mantova, Italy).
