The New Mutants: Superheroes and the Radical Imagination of American Comics

Ramzi Fawaz, assistant professor,
UW–Madison Department of English

Host: UW Alumni, Badger Cafe Madison Series
When: April 17
Time: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: One Alumni Place, 650 N. Lake St.
Registration: Open to Public, Recommended to register by April 9

Join Ramzi Fawaz as he explores how 1960s comic-book creators began to morph American superheroes from icons of nationalism and white masculinity into mutant outcasts. These powerful misfits and “freaks” soon came to embody the social and political aspirations of America’s most marginalized groups, including women, racial and sexual minorities, and the working classes. Fawaz, who came out at a young age, will relate his personal perspective to the American idea of 1960s superheroes.

Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to all, but registration by April 9 is strongly recommended!
