The Digital Art of Preserving Your Memories

Do you have photos, home movies and videos, cassette tapes, and who knows what in a box under the bed or on a thumb drive in a drawer calling for your attention? Or thousands of photos on your phone or computer or in the cloud? Not sure how even to begin organizing, preserving, sharing, and passing on these memories? Need some motivation to get started?

October is Family History Month and National Archives Month, and the time is perfect to join your UWRA colleagues for an introduction to options for preserving your memories digitally. Using results from this past May’s survey of members, UWRA Member Jane Richard will discuss reasons for preserving your memories, outline steps in the process, suggest how to choose whether to do this yourself or work with a professional service, and how to find resources for learning more.

If you imagine yourself as a DIY-er or feel uneasy sending your memorabilia to someone else, UWRA Member Scott Springman will show you a couple of relatively easy methods to digitize a few–or even a large number of–pictures and suggest how AI might help.

Joyal Holder, Owner and Chief Preservation Officer of Holder Printworks of Madison, which helps preserve family memories, will describe what it’s like to work with a professional to archive your legacy.

After these informal presentations, we will have plenty of time for you to ask questions and share some of your experiences.

If you have preliminary questions for the speakers, please send to Program Coordinators Brad Hughes at bthughes@wisc.edu, Jane Richard at janemrichard@gmail.com, Scott Springman at srspring@wisc.edu and Kathy Christoph at kathy.christoph@gmail.com by Friday, September 13.
