Known for their sculpted beauty and scenic landscapes, the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior are also geologically spectacular. Join this virtual hike (and Kayak) lead by Brooke Norsted, Geology Museum Assistant Director to explore the history of volcanoes, oceans, and glaciers in the Upper Midwest.
Famous red sandstone sea caves, crystal clear Lake Superior waters and overlooks showcasing vibrant greenery at every stop — you’ll experience the unforgettable at the Apostle Island National Lakeshore in Bayfield County. Home to incredible views, distinct rock formations and historic lighthouses, this archipelago has 21 islands along 12 miles of the mainland coast.
Being known as the largest and cleanest of the great lakes, Lake Superior’s pristine waters are a place to uncover hidden beauty. Shipwrecks and sea caves make the Apostle Islands a popular area to scuba dive, kayak and sail.
As part of this adventure, we'll also have opportunities for participants to share memories they have of visiting this stunning part of Wisconsin.
Education has always been Brooke's second calling. Brooke earned a BA at Gustavus Adolphus College and a MS at UW-Madison working with Alan Carroll on the Green River Formation. Brooke's primary responsibilities at the museum includes coordinating outreach programs and managing the collections. In addition, being a part of a university community has exposed Brooke to opportunities to work on other fulfilling projects. These include Darwin Day (a day-long evolution symposium) and Expanding Your Horizons (an event that seeks to encourage junior high aged girls to remain interested in science, technology, engineering and math careers).
If you have preliminary questions for the speaker, please send to Program Coordinators Al Liegel at arliegel@wisc.edu by Wednesday, April 20.
