Russia’s war in Ukraine dates back to at least 2014. Russia initially annexed Crimea, followed shortly afterwards by the beginning of the war in the Donbas between Russia-backed separatists and the Ukraine military. Throughout 2021, tensions rose due to a Russian military buildup, and in early 2022 the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) accused Russia of readying for an invasion of the Ukrainian mainland, which the Russian government denied. In spite of the denial, on February 24 Russia invaded the sovereign country of Ukraine. The war is now 219 days old, and what was thought to be a quick victory for Putin has become a threat to Putin’s continued influence in Russia.

We’ll hear from Professor Mark Johnson, a Russian scholar of history, as he provides background and meaning for a world event that we are seeing in the news every day. The Ukraine war represents both a turning point for Ukraine and for Putin and Russia. Join us for this virtual “fireside chat” on December 6th from 2:00 – 3:30 pm.

Mark S. Johnson received his BA from UW-Madison (history and Russian) and MA and PhD from Columbia University and the Harriman Institute (history and Russian studies). He is currently teaching faculty in Educational Policy Studies at UW-Madison as well as a Fulbright Policy Specialist. He has done research and policy studies in Russia and other post-Soviet states, including program development and graduate-level teaching at the Institute of Education, National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow.
