Among the worries that haunt retirees is possibility that retirement might be ruined by the effects of aging — softening bones, wasting muscles, creaking joints, misfiring neurons. Is there any hope that medical science might find an elixir that eliminates, or at least postpones, the onset of these curses of the elderly? Sign in to a webinar on this subject by Adam Konopka, whose research is on the biological mechanisms causing the afflictions of old age and seeks to find medications that might beneficially modify those mechanisms. Dr. Konopka is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology of the UW-Madison Department of Medicine. He is conducting clinical trials on the effects of exercise and a medication, rapamycin, on musculoskeletal aging. Rapamycin has been shown to prolong life in mice and other experimental critters, and there are studies showing beneficial effects on humans. We hope you will join us to hear about the work that is being done on this complex problem that plays such an important role on our lives in retirement.

If you have preliminary questions for the speaker, please send them to program coordinator Millard Susman at msusman@wisc.edu by Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
