Whether you live on the East Side or the West side, you are invited to join us for breakfast via your smartphone or computer in the comfort of your home.

We think it is prudent to avoid direct contact for at least a little while, but that doesn’t mean that we have to give up conversation with our friends over a sweet roll and a cup of coffee. We can have a virtual, bring-your-own-sweet-roll breakfast without having to change out of our pajamas! And we can overcome the divide between East and West by setting up a digital meeting at which the Sofra gang and the Elie’s gang can get to know one another.

We look forward to "seeing" you.

The Disease, How it Spreads, Treatment and Pandemic Control

Almost since the beginning of 2020, our lives have been disrupted by a pathogen that seems like something out of an improbable science fiction movie. It lurks everywhere. Seemingly healthy friends can be super-spreaders. A shiny doorknob can be coated with a horde of killer virus particles. The virus is colorless, odorless, and too small to see. Most UWRA members are old enough to be considered “vulnerable” to this disease. The advice we receive from official sources is at best confusing. A trip to the grocery store feels a lot like a hike in a mine field. Times like this whet our desire for expert education and advice.

Dr. Dennis G. Maki will give a seminar on the novel coronavirus that has disrupted our lives. Dr. Maki is among the front-line defenders against this virus. He is the Ovid O. Meyer Professor of Medicine in the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Pulmonary-Critical Care Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, Wisconsin, attending physician in the UWHC Center for Trauma and Life Support and eICU, and former Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases 1979 through 2007. Dr. Maki is a world-renowned expert on infectious disease, the author of almost 400 peer-reviewed publications, and the recipient of numerous honors for his activities in research, health care, and teaching.

Join us for Richard J. Davidson presents a  framework for understanding well-being and how it might be cultivated. The framework has been in development for the past five years in the Center for Healthy Minds and includes four pillars of well-being: Awareness, Connection, Insight, and Purpose. Each of these four pillars of well-being exhibits plasticity - each can be nurtured through simple mental exercise. The relevance of the Center's work and the framework specifically for the current pandemic will be highlighted. Finally, some guided practices will be included that can practically be incorporated into our everyday lives.

Richard J. Davidson, PH.D. is the William James and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry; Founder & Director of the Center for Healthy Minds.

He has published more than 400 articles, numerous chapters and reviews and edited 14 books. He is the author (with Sharon Begley) of “The Emotional Life of Your Brain” published by Penguin in 2012. He is co-author with Daniel Goleman of “Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body”, published by Penguin Books in 2017.

Dr. Davidson is the recipient of numerous awards for his research. His research is broadly focused on the neural bases of emotion and emotional style and methods to promote human flourishing including meditation and related contemplative practices. His studies have included persons of all ages from birth though old age and have also included individuals with disorders of emotion such as mood and anxiety disorders and autism, as well as expert meditation practitioners with tens of thousands of hours of experience. His research uses a wide range of methods including different varieties of MRI, positron emission tomography, electroencephalography, and modern genetic and epigenetic methods.
