We welcome Spring at the lovely Olbrich Gardens and invite you to take a self-guided tour of the grounds this afternoon following our programs. What could be more appropriate for our morning program than to learn how “Gardens will Save the World” in an address from Benjamin Futa, Director of the Allen Centennial Gardens on the UW-Madison campus? There’s a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr., “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose eternal hope.” Luckily for us, gardens offer a wealth of eternal hope. Public gardens in particular take this one step further: they offer spaces where it’s possible for all kinds of people to come together. We need spaces and invitations to rediscover our humanity and our connection to nature, and public gardens can play this important role in our communities. Public gardens, like beautiful Allen Centennial Gardens, can break down barriers between people and plants.
Luncheon speaker, Dean John Karl Scholz is a passionate advocate of a liberal arts education. Yet (some) people misperceive what a Letters & Science education is all about. Hear about the College of Letters & Science at UW-Madison’s efforts to prepare its students to “make a good living and lead a good life.” Dean Scholz will discuss the demand for Wisconsin’s liberal arts graduates in the workplace and expands the idea of a “good life” to include not only the ability to appreciate and enjoy, but also the courage to question and engage.
